Participate in Studies

We have ongoing studies for which we are recruiting participants. Below are descriptions of our current active studies. If you believe you might be a good fit for any of the studies below, please call our research group phone number (919-843-3951) to request more information! Be sure to mention which study you are calling about—we will return your call as soon as we can.

Spider Phobia Study

  • Are you afraid of spiders?
  • Do you find spiders disgusting or aversive?
  • Do you avoid spiders?
  • Do you avoid places/situations where you may encounter spiders?

If you have any of the above spider concerns and you are age 18 and older, you may be eligible to participate in a FREE treatment study on overcoming spider phobia being conducted at the University of North Carolina. As part of this study, you will receive free treatment known to effectively treat spider phobia.

If you are interested, the first step is to conduct a 15 minute phone screening during which we would tell you more about the study and confirm that you are eligible to participate. In order to schedule this phone screening, please email spiderstudy@unc.edu including the following information:

  1. First name,
  2. Phone number, and
  3. Times you would be available to have a brief (15 minute) phone call.

Treatment of Social Anxiety Study

Do you feel anxious in social settings? Or hate presentations and public speaking?

If you experience social anxiety and are 18 years of age or older, you might be eligible to participate a research study involving therapy through a smartphone app. We are studying how an app may help people address their social anxiety disorder.

Study participation involves 10 weeks of therapy through a smartphone app, as well as three in-person assessments. You will be given access to a therapeutic smartphone app at no cost to you.
